Why AI + Leadership Is the Biggest Opportunity in L&D

AI is transforming every workplace. But tools alone don't drive change - leaders do. This programme builds both.

The Gap No One Else Is Filling

AI Without Leadership Fails

70% of AI initiatives stall - not because the technology doesn't work, but because teams aren't coached through adoption. Leaders are the missing piece.

First-Line Leaders Are the Key

Your team leaders are closest to the work. When they understand AI, they spot opportunities, coach their teams, and turn resistance into momentum.

AI + Leadership = Compounding Returns

Leaders who understand both AI and people development don't just adopt tools - they build AI-confident teams that continuously improve. The impact multiplies.

Built for People Leaders

Designed for anyone who is about to lead, just started leading, or leading their first team properly — whatever your job title, if you have responsibility for people, this fits.

Who is this actually for?

Three career stages — one programme. Whether you’re emerging talent about to be promoted, just stepped up into your first team-leader role, or running an established team and ready to formalise the skills, the curriculum flexes to where you are.

About to step up

Emerging talent

Top performers identified for promotion. Future team leaders, supervisors, shift leaders — ready to learn the leadership skills before the title arrives.

★ Core audience

New first-line leaders

Recently promoted into team leader, shift manager, supervisor or section lead roles. Building the foundations of how you lead, develop and steady your team.

This is who the programme is designed around
Ready to formalise

Experienced first-line leaders

Already running a team well but never had the formal leadership training. Coming back to consolidate, get the CMI L3 Award, and prepare for the next step up.

In every case, your current job title matters less than what you actually do. If you have, or are about to have, responsibility for people, the programme fits. Below are the kinds of roles our learners typically come from — not a checklist.

👔

Team Leaders

Lead frontline teams through AI adoption with confidence and psychological safety.

Shift Managers

Implement AI tools across rotating shifts while building team engagement.

Section Leaders

Drive data-informed decisions and coach teams on using AI insights.

📋

Leadership Styles & Communication

Understand how you lead, when to flex it, and how to land your message. The foundation half-day for any first-line leader.

Why this matters

Your team isn’t one person. Each one needs a slightly different version of you to thrive. This half-day gives you the styles, the language and the confidence to adapt without losing who you are.

Half-day · one of three

What you cover

  • Master the three core leadership styles — action-centred (Adair), situational, transformational — and know when each one serves you
  • Map your dominant style using a structured self-assessment — and identify where it works for you and where it’s holding you back
  • Adapt your style to each team member based on their will and skill levels — the four leadership modes every first-line leader needs
  • Build presentation confidence — structure a message, hold the room, handle questions you didn’t prepare for
  • Develop influencing skills without formal authority — the three influencing pathways (logic, emotion, relationship)
  • Tailor your communication to your audience — senior exec, peer, direct report, customer — same message, four versions
  • Run a difficult conversation with confidence — the script that respects the person and still holds the standard
  • Build your personal leadership brand — what you stand for, what you don’t tolerate, and how your team experiences it
You leave with

Your personal leadership style profile + communication playbook — the foundation for everything else you’ll build over the apprenticeship.

Developing Individuals & Managing Your Team

Coach the people in your team to grow alongside the tools. Identify development needs, give feedback that actually changes behaviour, and build a team culture where people speak up early.

Why this matters

You can have the best workflow and the best AI tools — and still fail if the people aren’t growing. This half-day gives you the coaching, feedback and team-building skills the best first-line leaders all share.

Half-day · one of three

What you cover

  • Identify each team member’s development needs using the will-and-skill matrix — lead each person differently based on where they sit
  • Master coaching conversations using the GROW model — structured questioning that shifts ownership back to the person being coached
  • Give effective, behaviour-specific feedback — the SBI model (Situation, Behaviour, Impact) including the conversations most managers avoid
  • Build a team culture where people speak up, ask questions, and bring problems up early — the four behaviours that destroy psychological safety
  • Run high-quality 1:1s that go beyond status updates — the agenda template your team will actually value
  • Set SMART development goals tied to clear capability outcomes — and review them properly mid-year
  • Identify your team’s emerging leaders and design the stretch plan that grows them into the next role
  • Handle underperformance fairly — the conversation, the support plan, the escalation pathway, and what good HR involvement looks like
You leave with

Your team development plan + coaching framework — specific 90-day actions per team member, with the GROW and SBI templates ready to use.

★ CMI L3 Award · Assignment Unit
M11

Supporting Teams Through Change & Resolving Conflict

Lead the team through workplace change with empathy and structure. Handle resistance, manage conflict constructively, and build resilience. This is the CMI Level 3 Award assignment unit.

Why this matters

Change makes people anxious. Conflict makes most managers want to hide. You can’t lead a first-line team and avoid either. Complete the CMI 310 assignment in this module and you walk out with the CMI Level 3 Award in Management & Leadership on your CV.

Half-day · CMI L3 assignment unit

What you cover

  • Lead the team through workplace change with confidence — the five emotional stages people move through and what they need from you at each
  • Spot resistance early — the four signals first-line leaders typically miss until it’s already a problem
  • Build resilience in yourself and your team — practical techniques that hold up under real pressure, not just on a poster
  • Handle conflict constructively rather than avoiding it — the three classic conflict response patterns and how to break them
  • Mediate disagreements between team members before they escalate — the structured conversation that resolves most issues in 20 minutes
  • Manage your own reactions when a team member challenges you publicly — staying composed, holding the standard
  • Build the psychological safety that brings concerns up early — rather than the silent resignation that ends in a tribunal
  • Complete the CMI 310 assignment with full tutor guidance — the qualification is in your hands at the end of this half-day
You leave with

Your team change & conflict toolkit + CMI 310 assignment ready to submit. On completion, the CMI Level 3 Award in Management & Leadership qualification on your CV.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the programme.

Who is this programme for?

Team leaders, shift managers, section leads, project coordinators, aspiring first-line managers, and team coaches. Anyone who manages or coaches people and needs to lead them through AI adoption. This is NOT for individual contributors - it's for people in leadership roles.

Do I need AI experience?

No. We start from the fundamentals: what is AI, why it matters, ethics. You'll learn alongside your team. The programme assumes no prior technical knowledge - it builds from first principles and is designed for leaders, not data scientists.

What does it cost my company?

£0 out-of-pocket. The £18,000 cost is covered by your payroll levy. If you don't have a levy account or have unused balance, TESS can help you access it. Apprentices over 19 at start of apprenticeship cost 5% shared (£900). The government funds 95%.

How is the programme delivered?

All sessions are delivered via live online workshops (Zoom or Microsoft Teams), so your team can learn from their desks - no travel or venue costs required. We deliver nationwide across England, running closed cohorts so your team learns together. Face-to-face delivery can be arranged on request.

How long is the programme?

15–18 months, including EPA (End-Point Assessment). The first 14–15 months cover the 14 modules. Months 15–18 focus on the workplace project, portfolio, and independent assessment. Pace adapts to your apprentice's progress.

Can your team help manage the apprenticeship?

Yes. TESS handles recruitment, training delivery, EPA coordination with BCS, and progress tracking. You manage the apprentice's day job and provide a mentor. We'll guide you on all apprenticeship compliance and reporting.
